Books Read (or at least attempted) for Wyrd & Wonder 2021

The Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz – *** (reread)

And this is a good example of why I don’t reread as much as I’d like: I wind up feeling somewhat meh about so many of my rereads. Still like the characters, but the world building was super squirrel-ly.

The House of Hades by Rick Riordan – ***

There were moments – I mean, of course there was, it’s a Riordan book (there’s always moments in his books) – but most of the time… I’m just wondering if maybe I’m too old because I keep wanting more (more depth, more impact (except when I want less fights)) and I don’t know if that’s a symptom of MG books or just a sign that this isn’t the author for me. (I’m still here only because I need to get to Magnus Chase.)

Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim – DNF

I take full responsibility for DNF’ing this one. I might have known what it was at one point (like when I put in on my TBR three years ago) but for the six months at least, I thought it was something completely different than it was. If I’d known, I would have still tried to read it, but probably just grabbed a sample.

Deosil by Jordan L. Hawk – *****

Occasionally in life, you will come across a series finale that leaves you not wanting to let the characters go. This was just such a finale for me. Honestly, the road here was rocky, but this book was amazing and I am so happy I kept going back there around book 5 when my interest was waning. (This is an eleven book series.)

Mort by Terry Pratchett – **

So I know Pratchett’s work and I usually like it – but between the bog standard ‘romance’ and the teen-aged boy mentality and the dated feeling with everything to do with romance and/or women… I’m kind of thinking about forgetting Discworld.

City of Betrayal by Claudie Arseneault – *****

… I want to hug every POV character. But I won’t because at least one of them does not like being touched. Anyway, this is an amazing second book to the series and I love the characters so much and I love the queerness in a book that isn’t about that. Highly recommend this series.

I’m also currently – perpetually, it seems – in the midst of rereading The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes. It’s such a fun fantasy heist story and it’s really working out well for me, even being a reread. (And even considering how long I’ve been working on rereading it.)

 

I was supposed to get to Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria – and even a recent as last week, I thought I’d make it. I, however, have not read more than a chapter any day for over a week, I think. Needless to say, that’s crimped my plans a little.

 

 

 

Anyway, once again, had fun despite my poor planning. All you people that participated in this thing – especially while holding a full time job or school – are all rockstars. Me? I need sleep.
